Maria Strachan's Awards

Maria left school to start work at 15 in keeping with most girls in the 1960s. Maria trained as a nurse in 1974/5 but this was not by far the first indication of her caring and compassion.

In 1980 Maria studied for an English O-level achieving a it at the first time, as well as bringing up a young family. A year later she gained Highers in English, and an O-level in Modern Studies. In 1982 Maria attended classes and gained a Level 1 Qualification Course with the Scottish Pre-Schools Playgroups Association with classes at St Margarets High in Airdrie.

Maria started a degree course in Social Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University and completed 2 years achieving a Certificate in Social Sciences in 1987 before having to take time out due to ill-health and family committments whilst she was pregnant with Mark.

Maria qualified with the Advanced Certificate in Food Hygiene at Motherwell College in January 1992.

Maria gained a Performance Management Certificate through a programme sponsored by Monklands Enterprise. Following this course, the Enterprise trust sponsored some of the costs of Maria achieving ISO9002 status for Drumpark Cottage Residential Care Home. A considerable achievement as hers was the first care of its type to achieve this status in the UK. Tom Clarke the MP presented the award at a ceremony at drumpark Cottage which was attended by residents, staff and friends.

Maria gained with Ann Sinclair from Drumpark Cottage, the SHNC in Social Care in 1993 following a years course commenced in August 1992. Maria followed this with a years course on Counselling, taking several of the Drumpark Cottage staff with her. Maria completed this successfully in 1994.

Maria attended various other courses, particulalrly around her work in the care sector and that relating to the work of achieving the internationally recognised ISO9002 award.
